Municipal waste generation up to 505 kg per person

In 2020, the amount of municipal waste generated per person in the EU amounted to 505 kg, 4 kg per person more than in 2019 and 38 kg more than in 1995. In total, the EU generated 225.7 million tonnes of municipal waste in 2020, a 1% increase compared to 2019 (+1.8 million tonnes) and +14% compared to 1995 (+27.7 million tonnes).

CO2 reduction potential by the European Waste Management Sector

In a joint study, four European waste management associations: the European Waste Management Association (FEAD); the Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants (CEWEP); the RDF Industry Group; and the Dutch Waste Management Association (DWMA), publish their findings for the potential for CO2 reductions within the waste management sector. The research was conducted by Prognos and CE Delft, two well-known and established centres of research.

Mixed waste sorting changing the game at IVAR IKS in Norway

TOMRA and a Norwegian waste sorting plant have demonstrated that mixed waste sorting prior to disposal is a superior solution to separate collection. Since it stopped the separate collection for plastics in its region and unleashed the power of mixed waste sorting, the facility increased recovery rates from 28% to 82% and achieved recycling rates of 56,4%, thus meeting the EU’s 2025 recycling targets ahead of time. Today, IVAR ranks first in processing MSW by volume.

Aumentati i flussi illegali di RAEE per l’aumento del valore delle materie prime

Pubblicati i dati 2021 di Erion, il sistema multi-consortile per la gestione dei rifiuti associati ai prodotti elettrici ed elettronici: gestiti oltre 288.000 tonnellate di e-waste, in diminuzione rispetto al 2020. Sono cresciuti, infatti, i flussi illegali di RAEE per via dell’aumento del valore delle materie prime (+60 % annuo per il ferro).

Record collection of glass containers for recycling hits 78% in the EU

Latest value chain data – published by Close the Glass Loop – show that the EU28 average collection for recycling rate for glass packaging grew to the record rate of 78% in 2019. This represents a growth of 2 percentage points compared to 2018 performance, which shows that the glass packaging value chain is delivering on its circular economy ambition.
